Schneider Launches Bulk Intermodal Service
Schneider National Bulk Carriers said it has launched a bulk intermodal transportation service utilizing a new 40-foot tank container that can be used on trucks or trains to haul liquid bulk chemicals across the United States.
The new system, which the company plans to adapt for Canada and Mexico service, gives benefits to chemical shippers, the company said in a statement.
The benefits include utilization of local Schneider drayage drivers, who move product to and from rail ramps and develop relationships and expertise with their customers. Their ability to grow into true delivery specialists improves service levels, Schneider said.
“With concerns about driver capacity becoming more prominent for both carriers and shippers, we need to offer solutions for moving our customers’ products in innovative ways,” said George Grossardt, general manager of Schneider’s bulk division.
Although Schneider is currently approved to haul only nonhazardous chemicals, the company said it expects to gain hazmat certification from railroads this year.
Schneider National Bulk Carriers is a unit of Schneider National Inc., which is ranked No. 6 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
