Senators Move to Modify Background Check Law

Four senators took the first step toward cleaning up the language of the wide-sweeping USA Patriot Act, designed by Congress and the White House to protect the nation from future terrorist attacks.

The four have introduced a bill to clarify various aspects of the newly enacted legislation in the controversial area of expanding investigations into the backgrounds of some truck drivers.

Sen. Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.), who introduced the new legislation with Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Gordon Smith (R-Ore.) and John Breaux (D-La.), said the bill would provide “a clear understanding of the requirements associated with granting a license permitting a driver to transport hazardous cargo.”
