The chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Pa.), has defeated primary election challengers, including one backed by conservatives and the Tea Party.
Meanwhile on the same May 20 primary day, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) easily won his contest in Kentucky, also besting a candidate with Tea Party support.
In Idaho, two long-time Republican incumbents beat back challenges from candidates with conservative and Tea Party support. Gov. Butch Otter won the right to seek a third term and Rep. Mike Simpson to seek a ninth term in Congress.
In another hotly contested primary, this one on the Democratic side in Pennsylvania, businessman Tom Wolf won the party’s gubernatorial primary campaign. He will face incumbent Republican Gov. Tom Corbett in November.
Among those whom Wolf beat in the Democratic primary was Rep. Allyson Schwartz.
