Rep. Bud Shuster
A Republican from south central Pennsylvania, Shuster had just finished a six-year stint as chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. In a statement from his Washington, D.C., office, he cited hospitalizations and “health scares” for both himself and his wife Patty as reasons for his sudden retirement.

“While we remain optimistic, these experiences have caused me to re-evaluate my priorities and responsibilities,” he wrote. Shuster will turn 69 on Jan. 23.
