The mayors of the seven cities selected as finalists for the Department of Transportation’s Smart City Challenge will make their final pitches to Secretary Anthony Foxx on June 9. The winner is expected to be announced by the end of the month.

The finalists are Austin, Texas; Columbus, Ohio; Denver; Kansas City, Missouri; Pittsburgh; Portland, Oregon; and San Francisco. The cities are competing for up to $40 million in government funding and $10 million from Vulcan, Inc. to fully integrate innovative technologies — self-driving cars, connected vehicles, and smart sensors — into their transportation networks.

The seven finalists, who were chosen from a pool of 78 entrants in the contest that Foxx announced Dec. 7, each received a $100,000 grant to further develop their proposals with assistance from DOT staffers.
