A big snowstorm that dumped more than a foot of snow in the Midwest left hundreds of motorists caught in traffic jams and delayed about 1,000 flights at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, news services reported.

As many as 800 vehicles remained stranded on Interstate 90 in Wisconsin on Thursday morning, the Associated Press reported, citing the Wisconsin National Guard.

About 1,000 flights at O’Hare were canceled Wednesday afternoon because of severe weather, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Meanwhile, tornadoes in several southern states caused widespread damage to roads and infrastructure, and killed at least 55 people, news services reported.

The National Weather Service issued more than 1,000 tornado warnings in an 11-state area between Tuesday and Wednesday, AP reported.

FedEx Corp. temporarily suspended some delivery guarantees after tornadoes disrupted some of its operations in the South, Bloomberg reported.

Some of the carrier’s 120 overnight flights at its hub in Memphis, Tenn., were delayed because of the storms, Bloomberg said.

Diesel engine and heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar Inc. said a portion of its facility in Oxford, Miss., collapsed on Tuesday as the result of severe weather in the region.

The company said in a statement it was working to assess the impact of the damage to the facility, which manufactures hose couplings for Caterpillar products.
