Speaker Pelosi: Highway Bill On Tap for January

Comprehensive highway policy legislation will be unveiled later this month, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters Jan. 16.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Pelosi said on Capitol Hill. “It’s something we talked about during the campaign. It’s something the president talked about as a priority during the campaign.”
“We thought we would be able to move in a positive way on this. So far they have not come on board. However, we decided now we’ll just have to go forward,” she added, referring to the administration.
DeFazio
Pelosi (D-Calif.) has indicated the highway policy measure would include provisions pertaining to climate change. The transportation panel in the House, led by Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), has yet to officially announce the bill’s release date.
The legislation would be used to update the FAST Act five-year highway law, which expires in September. On the Senate side, the Environment and Public Works panel passed a version of the FAST Act update last year. Provisions related to commercial transportation, transit and the Highway Trust Fund were not addressed in the Senate bill.
The trust fund relies on insufficient revenue from the federal gas and diesel tax. Its shortfall is projected to occur near the end of 2021.
