Supermarket Chain, Teamsters Get Desired Results From Contract

The Teamsters’ 2-month-old strike of Associated Wholesale Grocers ended June 4 with the ratification of an eight-year contract between the company and three locals in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

The contract includes better pensions and health benefits, wage increases and a $3.5 million settlement for workers in Kansas and Missouri.

It appears both the company and the union got what they wanted in the deal. The grocer outsourced its warehousing and trucking operations, while Teamsters members kept their jobs and received a sweeter contract to boot.

The dispute started when the grocery company and Teamsters Locals 955 in Kansas City, Kan., and 245 in Springfield, Mo., failed to renegotiate a contract that expired April 1.
