The founder and CEO of Swift Transportation will retire at the end of the year, the company announced Sept. 8. Jerry Moyes founded the company in 1966 and today it ranks No. 6 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers with more than 20,000 tractors and 65,000 trailers.

“I want to thank everyone at Swift for helping me build this great company over the last 50 years. Swift is a strong company, strategically well positioned for continued growth and success,” Moyes said.

Chief Operating Officer Richard Stocking, who joined Swift in 1992, will become the new president and CEO. Moyes and Stocking will officially be co-CEOs until the end of the year, although Stocking will take over day-to-day operations effective immediately.

Moyes ran Swift until 2005 when he was forced out due to a Security and Exchange Commission investigation into insider trading, but returned to the company in 2006.

On Jan. 1, 2017, Moyes will become Chairman Emeritus and a member of the Board of Directors.
