The Teamsters union said Friday its members ratified a new five-year contract with DHL Express that will cover about 7,000 workers.

The contract, the Teamsters’ second national agreement in the past month, marks the second new national pacts negotiated by the Teamsters Union in more than 30 years. In total, about 55% of eligible workers voted on the contract, the union said.

The Teamsters' national negotiating commitee approved the pact in February. In April, the union approved new national contract with UPS Freight, affecting about 10,000 workers.

The Teamsters said the contract boosts wages and benefits, improves working conditions and strengthens job security for drivers, freight handlers, warehouse workers, clerical workers and call center representatives at dozens of U.S. DHL Express locations.

The five-year contract expires on March 31, 2013. Its highlights include annual wage and benefit increases, including $8.35 over the term of the contract for pick up-and-delivery and clerical workers; health-and-welfare and pension funds that will be maintained for current employees; and a cost-of- living adjustment that applies to all employees and operations covered by the new agreement.

DHL Americas is ranked No. 3 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
