Analyst Says More Ethanol Won’t Stem Consumption
ATLANTA — A leading energy analyst said President Bush’s plan to increase ethanol production would not reduce the country’s overall energy consumption or help the United States move away from oil as its main source of energy for transportation.“There are no alternatives to hydrocarbon-based energy in the foreseeable future,” Michael Economides, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at the University of Houston, said here last month during the annual winter meeting of the rate bureau SMC3.Last month, Bush called on Congress to approve a plan that would require the United States to produce a total of 35 billion gallons of alternative fuels by 2017, though he did not say how much of the production would be ethanol. (Click here for previous coverage.)But Economides said there is not enough corn produced in the United States to dramatically increase the availability of ethanol, and if the country started importing corn, the resulting price increase would not make the plan economically feasible.
