Tesla Recalls 1 Million Cars Over Window Problem

Tesla was forced to recall more than 1 million electric cars in the United States over windows that could pinch occupants as they’re being rolled up.
The automatic windows are supposed to stop if they detect an obstacle as they close, but Tesla said production testing carried out in August revealed a flaw in the window’s automatic reversal system, according to documents posted Sept. 22 by U.S. safety regulators.
A closing window without the proper automatic reversing system may “exert more force” before retracting, increasing the risk of injury for Tesla drivers and passengers. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted the issue is a violation of federal safety standards for power windows.
The recall covers some 2017-2022 Model 3, 2020-2021 Model Y, and 2021-2022 Model S and Model X vehicles, but Tesla owners won’t need to bring in their vehicles to be serviced. The electric car company said the issue can be addressed through an online software update, which has been downloaded in vehicles still on the production line and in pre-delivery starting Sept. 13.

Tesla’s filing with federal safety regulators also said it is unaware of any warranty claims or injuries due to the problem as of Sept. 16.
Owners will be notified by letter starting Nov. 15.
