Texas House Approves $1 Billion Transportation Funding Bill

The Texas House early Monday approved almost $1 billion in funding for major transportation projects statewide, the Associated Press reported.

The overnight vote came as the legislature’s 30-day special session entered its final hours in advance of its adjournment, scheduled for midnight Tuesday, AP reported.

The measure would divert almost $1 billion annually from the state’s reserve fund toward building and maintaining roads, AP said.

State transportation officials have warned lawmakers that Texas needs to spend $4 billion more per year just to keep up with its rapidly expanding population.

If passed, the funding measure would require amending the state constitution and would go before Texas voters in November, AP reported.
