Tolls Proposed for New Md. Highway

A toll road under construction in Maryland would cost trucks $36.85 to drive its entire length under a proposed toll schedule.

The Maryland Transportation Authority Wednesday released the toll proposals for the Intercounty Connector, an 18.8-mile highway in Montgomery and Price George’s counties, the Washington Post reported.

Large trucks would pay 60 cents to $2.63 a mile, depending on the time of day. Travel would be more expensive during peak commuting times than other times.

Two-axle vehicles will be charged 20 cents to 35 cents per mile, the Post said.

Tolls will be collected electronically at regular highway speeds, using E-ZPass technology, the Post said. Vehicles without E-ZPass transponders will be photographed, and the vehicles' owners will be mailed bills for the tolls plus a $3 surcharge.

Public comments on the proposed tolls will be accepted until Nov. 23, the Post reported.
