Trailer Shipments to Top 1998 Record

Trailer shipments in 1999 will reach about 302,000, topping the record set in 1998 by almost 8%, according to a survey.

However, the report from an economic research firm in Smithtown, N.Y., noted a softening economy should pull shipments down in 2000.

Peter Toja, president of Economic Planning Associates, said his company’s survey found manufacturers sent out 230,690 trailers for the nine months that ended Sept. 30, compared with 208,985 for the same period in 1998.

Sales figures are not collected for the trailer manufacturing industry. Shipment figures are used as a surrogate because they show sales-related activity in the sector.
