Truck Stowaway Deaths Spur European Countermeasures

The discovery of the bodies of 58 Chinese immigrants who died in a truck while trying to sneak into England prompted outrage overseas and forced European officials to step up efforts to stop human smuggling.

U.S. officials, meanwhile, said stowaways trying to enter America by truck are few and far between.

European Union leaders meeting in Portugal announced in mid-June that they would accelerate efforts to curb illegal immigration, including a crackdown against smugglers by the EU’s law enforcement agency, Europol.

In addition, British Home Secretary Jack Straw has said he is considering installing X-ray machines, now being tested in his country, at every port to scan arriving trucks.
