Parcel carrier UPS Inc. said Friday it would raise shipping rates for its air and ground services by nearly 5%, effective Dec. 31.

The increases comprise a 4.9% rate hike for UPS Ground and Ground Hundredweight shipments, and a net average increase of 4.9% on all air express and U.S. origin international shipments, UPS said in a statement.

The increase for air express and international shipments is based on a 6.9% increase in the company’s base list rate, balanced with a 2% fuel surcharge reduction, said UPS.
