UPS Inc. said it is expanding its backup package drop-off service, Access Point, to all major U.S. metropolitan areas by 2015.

UPS Access Points are typically convenience or grocery stores open late and on weekends where drivers can drop off packages that can’t be delivered to a home address.

The service is available at 300 locations in New York and Chicago, where the company installed self-service smart lockers at some pickup points.

“The only thing consumers dislike more than missing a package is having to rearrange their lives to retrieve it. Earlier this year, 37% of U.S. online shoppers participating in the 2014 UPS Pulse of the Online Shopper study, said they want alternate delivery locations when they are not at home,” the package delivery company said in a statement.

UPS said it plans to add all 4,400 store locations to the Access Point network in January.

“With government-issued identification, or a mobile device, consumers can retrieve their package from a locker in less time than it takes to withdraw cash from an ATM,” UPS said.

UPS ranks No 1 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
