UPS Inc. predicts it will move more than 34 million parcels on Dec. 22 — its busiest day of the year and double the average daily volume.

The company also said it expects to handle about 585 million parcels in December.

FedEx Corp. said it expected Dec. 15 to be its busiest day ever, when it handled an estimated 22.6 million packages, topping last year’s peak-day volume of 22 million.

The record-breaking day was part of FedEx’s busiest week of the year, Dec. 7-13, in which it moved about 83 million packages through its global network.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Postal Service said its peak day was also Dec. 15, with more than 640 million cards, letters and packages processed, up from 607 million on last year’s peak day.

From Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, the Postal Service expects to ship 12.7 billion letters, cards and packages.

UPS ranks No. 1 and FedEx ranks No. 2 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
