UPS Freight, the less-than-truckload unit of UPS Inc., said Friday it would raise general rates an average of 5.4% for 2008, effective Feb. 4.

The increase covers non-contractual shipments in the United States and Canada and applies to minimum charge, LTL and truckload rates, the company said.

“We are continuing to improve service to our customers and to provide the latest technology,” UPS Freight President Jack Holmes said in a statement.

UPS said in November it would raise its general package rates for 2008 by 4.9%.
