UPS Inc. said Tuesday it is partnering with the U.S. Postal Service for a new retail-return service in which consumers can send returns by UPS via their own mailboxes.

Known as UPS Returns Flexible Access, it will use the post office’s parcel return service combined with UPS’ delivery network to allow retailers to provide their customers with increased convenience in returning items.

Consumers in the pilot program will receive special package labels to put the packages in their mailbox for pickup or may leave packages at their local Post Office or in a postal collection box.

Once a returns package arrives at the local post office, UPS will pick it up and transport it to the retailer via the UPS ground network. The pilot program is expected to last about five months.

UPS is ranked No. 1 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
