UPS Reduces Number of Expected Pilot Furloughs

UPS Inc. said it now expects to furlough 230 pilots, fewer than the 300 it estimated in February, due to improving financial conditions, the Associated Press reported.

The air and ground parcel carrier has already furloughed about 109 pilots out of the expected 230, AP said.

UPS employs about 3,000 pilots. It is flying fewer planes than it did several years ago, so it needs fewer pilots.

In announcing the reduction in expected furloughs, UPS cautioned that “current economic signals remain mixed, and we believe that the recovery will be gradual.”

UPS is ranked No. 1 on the Transport Topics 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian for-hire carriers.
