ST. PETERSBURG BEACH, Fla. — Peter B. Neydon, president of USF Holland, knows the importance of a harmonious business culture in running a successful trucking company.
Since becoming only the fourth chief executive in the company’s 71-year history in 1996, Neydon has led the Holland, Mich.-based regional less-than-truckload carrier through its fastest growth spurt ever without sacrificing profits and preserving a harmonious working relationship with Teamsters-represented drivers and freight handlers. Forty-three percent of USF Holland’s 9,300 employees have been hired in the last four years.
“We learned from the founders of our company that no matter how good your facilities and equipment may be, it is people who share common values and believe in doing the job right that makes your company special,” he told members of the North American Trucking Industrial Relations Association at its 14th annual conference Nov. 13-15.

Neydon said his challenge has been to pass along an unwritten code of conduct developed by company founders John and Catherine Cooper and cultivated in later years by their son Charles and his successor, Michael Gorno.
