Vermont Lawmakers Clear the Way for 53-Foot Trailers

Vermont is a governor’s signature away from opening up much of the state to 53-foot trailers, ending an often bitter battle that pitted one community against another.

Legislation approved by the General Assembly May 13 establishes a state network of roads on which 72-foot long trucks could travel without a permit.

The 72-foot overall length for the tractor-trailer would allow enough room for both 53-foot trailers and the 48-footers that were the previous industry standard.

The bill also moves all of the diesel fuel tax to the pump, increases overweight fines and hands out more money for truck safety enforcement.
