Virginia E-ZPass Fee Plan Draws Opposition

A plan by the Virginia Department of Transportation to implement a $1 monthly fee for E-ZPass users has drawn public opposition, the Associated Press reported.

Most of the nearly 25,000 public comments submitted on the proposed fee were opposed to the idea, AP said.

Virginia Highway Commissioner Gregory Whirley told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that state officials will take the comments into consideration.

Several new toll roads are scheduled to open over the next few years, and VDOT said the monthly fee was needed to keep up with costs.

VDOT expects the fee to generate an average $13.8 million a year over five years, AP reported.
