Volvo Trucks North America said it will begin field testing trucks this month that are designed to meet stricter 2010 U.S. emissions regulations.
A total of 11 trucks with selective catalytic reduction technology will enter field testing this year, with more set for next year, Volvo said Wednesday.
The first five trucks equipped with SCR were Volvo VN Daycabs, delivered to Talon Logistics at VTNA’s headquarters in Greensboro, N.C.
Talon Logistics is the distribution unit of Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle, a food retailer and distributor. Talon accumulated more than six million miles in an earlier SCR field test with Volvo that began in 2002.
“This is a milestone in achieving cleaner air, while delivering the fuel economy, reliability and performance our customers demand,” said Peter Karlsten, VTNA’s Chief Executive Officer.
He said that SCR was “the best technology for producing very low [nitrogen oxide] emissions, plus excellent fuel economy.”
VTNA said it also draws on its parent company’s extensive experience with SCR in Europe, where it has built more than 100,000 trucks with the technology.
Volvo’s current emissions reduction technology uses exhaust gas recirculation with a diesel particulate filter.
