Voters Approve Road Projects in Colo., N.J., Maine

Sixty-two percent of Colorado voters approved a state plan to go $2.3 billion in debt to accelerate highway improvements on key roads, including Interstate 25.

Coloradans approved the biggest bond issue, but voters in Maine and New Jersey also approved transportation spending that should get road crews humming.

The Colorado spending plan, the first in state history to be paid for by bonds, should speed up construction of 28 highway projects, including widening I-25 north of Fort Collins, reconstruction of I-270 near Denver and widening of U.S. 50 from Grand Junction to Delta. Other projects include work on U.S. routes 160, 287, 285 and State Highway 82.

Gov. Bill Owens said at least 10 years will be shaved from construction timetables.
