Wal-Mart Stores said Thursday its fiscal second-quarter profit was 88 cents per share, at the top end of its guidance.

The company had forecast it would earn 83 to 88 cents for the quarter. Net income was steady at $3.44 million from a year ago, while last year’s per-share net income was 87 cents.

Net sales slipped 1.4% to $100.1 billion for the period ended July 31, Wal-Mart said in a statement.

With about 6,750 tractors and more than 55,000 trailers, Wal-Mart ranks No. 3 on the Transport Topics Private 100 listing of U.S. and Canadian private carriers.
