As the ranking member of the Transportation and Infrastructure panel in the House, Rep. Nick Rahall said he intends to press ahead with a long-term highway bill and support certain efforts to suspend the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s new hours-of-service rule. If West Virginians opt not to send Rahall back to Capitol Hill, Democrats would lose a key bipartisan player on major transportation issues. Most polls list Rahall as either tied or slightly ahead of his challenger, Republican state Sen. Evan Jenkins. In interviews, Jenkins has indicated he would support conservative Republicans’ efforts to limit the scope of federal agencies. However, his campaign has not produced a comprehensive position on transportation issues.
