Westport Innovations Inc. will stop taking customer orders for its 15-liter liquefied natural gas engines in November, the company said in its Oct. 30 earnings report.

The last day for orders of the Westport HD15 engine with current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency certification will be Nov. 15, the company said.

As recently as last month, Westport said it planned to continue offering the engine as long as there was demand for the product.

The HD15 is the only 15-liter natural-gas engine currently available for the North American trucking market. It is based on Cummins Inc.’s ISX15 diesel engine, but it uses Westport’s high-pressure, direct-injection technology.

The company said it has sold about 1,000 units since the product’s launch in 2007.

“Westport’s production focus is shifting from an upfit model to vertical integration of Westport’s next generation of HPDI for targeted OEMs,” the company said.

Westport said it plans to continue offering an HPDI engine in Australia “for the foreseeable future.”
