Yellow Corp. Lays Off 75

A softening economy has led the giant trucking company Yellow Corp. (YELL), a specialist in less-than-truckload shipments, to lay off 75 fulltime salaried personnel from its nationwide staff of 7,000 effective Jan. 12, according to a company spokesman.

Besides those layoffs, which the spokesman said the company would try to make temporary, Yellow has about 1,000 of its 20,000 unionized drivers and dock workers on temporary furlough. However, company representative Roger Dick said that is typical of the industry’s annual pattern, when the busy October-December quarter turns into the slower January-March stretch.

A majority of the layoffs, 40 of the 75, hit workers at the company’s Overland Park, Kan., headquarters. Dick said most of those affected worked at the company’s flagship carrier, Yellow Freight System.
