Yellow Corp. Orders Layoffs, Cites Economy

A softening economy slathered on top of the traditionally slow winter season prompted less-than-truckload carrier Yellow Corp. (YELL) to lay off 75 full-

ime, salaried personnel Jan. 12, according to a company spokesman.

A majority of the employees affected worked in the company’s Overland Park, Kan., headquarters. Most of them worked for the corporation’s flagship carrier, Yellow Freight System, although some people had assignments with a sister company, Yellow Technologies, or the holding company.

An affiliated company, Transportation.com, was not affected.

Spokesman Roger Dick said the company would try to hire back the employees when business picks up. “We’re still anticipating growth for the year. We hope this won’t be a permanent situation.”
