YRC Management Unit to Oversee Yellow, Roadway Brands
Roadway President Smid to Head New Unit; Yellow’s Welch to Retire

Less-than-truckload carrier YRC Worldwide, formerly Yellow Roadway Corp., said Monday it created a new management structure to oversee its Yellow Transportation and Roadway brands.The company said Roadway President Mike Smid will head the combined unit, to be called YRC National Transportation. Yellow Transportation President James Welch will retire at the end of this month, YRC said.Smid will be succeeded as president of Roadway by Terry Gilbert, who was executive vice president of sales and marketing for Roadway. Welch will be succeeded by Maynard Skarka, who was senior vice president of operations for Yellow Transportation."Yellow Transportation and Roadway will maintain their strong, independent brands and networks in the marketplace," Smid said.The move comes just a week after YRC said it was folding its USF Bestway unit into its USF Reddaway subsidiary. (Click here for previous coverage.)YRC Worldwide Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bill Zollars also said the company had created YRC Enterprise Solutions Group, to help customers navigate among YRC's offerings in trucking and logistics services. That unit will be led by Greg Reid, the corporation's chief marketing officer.Yellow and Roadway Corp. merged in 2003 to form Yellow Roadway Corp., which was renamed YRC Worldwide at the beginning of last year.
