Engine maker Cummins Inc. said Wednesday it completed its acquisition of the emission control assets of Germany-based Hilite International.

Truck engine and components maker Cummins Inc. said it has signed an agreement to acquire Hilite International’s emissions-control business. Terms were not disclosed.

Navistar Inc. has formally resumed its battle with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, filing a second federal lawsuit to block the agency’s recently updated guidance for certification of heavy-duty truck engines using selective catalytic reduction technology to reduce emissions.

Navistar Inc. has urged U.S. and California environmental regulators to recall 2010-compliant heavy-duty truck engines using selective catalytic reduction emissions technology that the company claims can be defeated by drivers.

The Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board have agreed to begin a “thorough review” of their policies regarding the operation of selective catalytic reduction-equipped heavy-duty diesel engines when diesel engine fluid tanks run dry.

Daimler Trucks North America revved up the dispute between proponents of the two different diesel emissions reduction technologies, saying in a widely distributed letter to the trucking industry that rival Navistar Inc. “intentionally confused customers with fear-mongering, deception and distraction.”

Penske Truck Leasing Co. said that it has ordered 750 new Freightliner Cascadia tractors and 600 VN670 tractors from Volvo Trucks North America, all with 2010 selective catalytic reduction emissions technology, partially because of growing freight demand.

Navistar International Corp. announced that it has resolved its lawsuit against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which had challenged EPA’s guidance to engine makers for certification of 2010 engines using selective catalytic reduction to cut emissions.

Navistar International Corp. has withdrawn a lawsuit that it had filed against the California Air Resources Board, following an agreement with CARB that addressed the engine-related issues that prompted its original court action.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia set oral arguments for May 10 in Navistar’s lawsuit over the federal government’s certification of engines using selective catalytic reduction technology to meet new diesel engine emissions standards.
