What's That? WARN Act

The WARN Act or, Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act is a U.S. law requiring employers with 100 or more full-time employees to provide 60 days notice before mass layoffs or plant closures.

It aims to protect workers, their families, and local communities by giving them time to adjust to job loss, seek new employment, or pursue retraining.

In the trucking industry, the law applies to large companies with significant numbers of drivers or operational facilities. If a trucking company faces layoffs affecting 50 or more employees at a single site or shuts down an operation, it must comply with the WARN Act by notifying affected workers in advance. Smaller trucking firms with fewer than 100 employees are generally not subject to this requirement, though some states have adopted more stringent rules than the federal statute.

The WARN Act ensures that larger carriers are transparent about potential job losses, helping workers prepare for future employment or retraining opportunities in case of layoffs or closures.
