American Road Engineers Study European Style

A long-held belief of highway users and transportation engineers is that roadways in Western Europe are better built than those in the United States.

Some of the difference is due to the fact that most European highways are designed to accommodate more traffic and heavier trucks than are U.S. roads. Plus, they also cost substantially more to build. But now there is evidence that innovative contracting procedures also play an important role in the construction of high-quality, long-lasting highways, tunnels and bridges.

In June, a team of American highway engineers and academic researchers went to Europe to investigate methods used to finance, build and maintain roadways.
