APM Terminals Virginia opened its new $450 million, 291-acre container terminal Friday in Portsmouth, Va., the company said.
The 55-foot deep-water terminal is the largest privately owned container terminal and third-largest container terminal in the United States, APM said.
It is capable of handling 1 million twentyfoot-equivalent units annually, with the potential to expand to handle a capacity of more than 2 million TEU.
Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine (D) was on hand for the opening, and called the project a “huge win” for the state, the Virginian-Pilot newspaper reported Saturday.
New technology at the terminal is designed to keep workers and drivers safe, while expediting cargo movement through use of the newest, most advanced handling equipment, APM said.
APM Terminals is a subsidiary of Maersk Inc., a unit of Danish shipping and logistics firm A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. APM Terminals North America operates terminal facilities at 13 ports in the U.S.
