April 28 Deadline Approaching for TIGER Grant Applications
States and municipalities seeking federal aid this year to revamp critical infrastructure projects have until April 28 to apply for a popular grant program managed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
DOT announced $600 million for its latest round of Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant funds for government agencies.
Last year, DOT awarded $474 million to back 52 projects of regional or national significance that ranged from streetcar extensions and roadway improvements to the electrification of bus fleets and the expansion of ports. Maryland’s Port of Baltimore, for instance, was awarded $10 million to facilitate upgrades ahead of the expansion of the Panama Canal.
Local governments have shown interest in the funds. During the past four rounds, DOT said it received more than 4,000 applications requesting about $100 billion.
Since its inception in 2009, DOT has allocated more than $3 billion for several hundred projects. Obama administration officials say the TIGER program has promoted livability and improved the flow of freight along roads, rails and ports.
During his bus trip around the country last week, Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx highlighted TIGER-aided projects and sought to galvanize support for the administration’s infrastructure agenda.
“TIGER investments . . . expand opportunity through a strong transportation system that connects Americans with a better way of life,” Foxx said in statement.
Grant winners will be announced later this year.
