Arkansas Waives Registration Fee

Arkansas trucking companies will not have to pay a tax bill that a state agency sent mistakenly, the Associated Press reported.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department sent truckers a $5-per-vehicle fee that the state legislature eliminated in its session earlier this year, AP said.

The state collected about $2 million last year from the fees, according to the Arkansas Trucking Association, AP reported.

The tax was done away with so the state would be in compliance with the federal Unified Carrier Act of 2005, which will replace the Single State Registration System.

The state will no longer need the fee because it will not administer its own registry, AP reported.
