The American Society of Civil Engineers on May 10 plans to unveil a study highlighting the impact that deteriorating infrastructure has on the economy.
The study, “Failure to Act: Closing the Infrastructure Investment Gap for America’s Economic Future,” aims to show how underinvesting in rehabilitation projects for bridges, roadways and tunnels will contribute to economic slowdowns.
Greg DiLoreto, the group’s past president and chairman of the Committee for America’s Infrastructure, will elaborate on the study soon after its release.
The study will come a week before the kickoff of Infrastructure Week. The weeklong series of events, starting May 16, will consist of dozens of panels and workshops in Washington and in other cities with the intent of drawing attention to the issue.
In 2013, ASCE said in a quadrennial report the country had earned a D+ grade for its infrastructure. The group of engineers also estimates the country must come up with $3.6 trillion by 2020 to rehabilitate deteriorating infrastructure.
