ATA Elects Officers

NEW ORLEANS — John E. Wren, chief executive officer of Lakeville Motor Express, Roseville, Minn., was elected 1998-99 chairman of American Trucking Associations. He succeeded Edward R. Trout, president of Cornhusker Motor Lines, Omaha, Neb.

Mr. Wren was ATA first vice chairman for the past year and also headed the Wren Committee, which developed the restructuring plan for the association.

A former chairman of the Regular Common Carrier Conference, he aided in the merger of that group with the Regional & Distribution Carriers Conference to form the Distribution & LTL Carriers Assn. He is also a past chairman of the Minnesota Trucking Assn.

Lee P. Shaffer, president and CEO of Kenan Transport Co., Chapel Hill, N.C., is the new

irst vice chairman. He formerly served as one of three ATA vice chairmen.

Vernon E. Garner, president of Garner Trucking, Findlay, Ohio, was elected a vice chairman.

Duane W. Acklie, chairman of Crete Carrier Corp., Lincoln, Neb., and David G. McCorkle, chairman of McCorkle Truck Line, Oklahoma City, were re-elected vice chairmen.

Arnold F. Wellman, vice president of public affairs for United Parcel Service in Washington, D.C., was re-elected secretary, and Robert A. Young III, president and CEO of Arkansas Best Corp., Fort Smith, Ark., was re-elected treasurer.

ATA recognizes longstanding contributions and service to the organization with a special category of membership: vice president at large-emeritus. Re-elected to that position were: F. Mr. Dixon’s daughter, Sheila Foertsch, who is managing director of the Wyoming association, accepted a special award on his behalf.

New Vice Presidents Chris N. Bunning Jr., president of John Bunning Transfer Co., Rock Springs, Wyo., was elected a vice president at large. He had been state vice president to ATA last year.
