Economic ruin, not highway safety, would be the result of the hours-of-service changes envisioned by the Department of Transporaton, according to the leader of American Trucking Associations.
Walter B. McCormick Jr., president of the group based in Alexandria, Va., on May 23 called for the formation of a national grass-roots industry campaign to lead the fight against the proposed rules. ATA is among the sharpest critics of the regulatory effort unveiled April 25 by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
The grass-roots effort would alert Americans and members of Congress to the “true results” of the proposal that would significantly increase “the number of U.S. trucks traveling on already clogged U.S. highways,” McCormick said.
he effort is to be led by Donald Schneider, president of Schneider National, Green Bay, Wis., and Gerald Detter, chief executive officer of Con-Way Transportation Services, Fort Worth, Texas. They were named co-chairmen of the newly formed Trucking Executives Leadership Council, and they will be supported by four regional chairs.
