KEY LARGO, Fla. — The first American Trucking Associations Foundation fellowship was awarded to a student at the University of Virginia as part of research effort that will be conducted jointly by the foundation and the university.
Kevin Smith, a civil engineering major from Williamsburg, Va., will work with the foundation staff and university faculty to evaluate a system that would integrate real-time traffic information to help companies make routing and dispatching decisions. The FleetForward project is the nation’s first advanced traveler information system designed for commercial vehicles.
The foundation announced the University Fellows Program at its annual meeting. It may expand the program to several other schools, including George Washington University, Iowa State University, the University of California-Riverside and Harvard University.
Susan Coughlin, the foundation’s chief operating officer, said the program aims to employ the resources of the nation’s most prestigious universities involved in transportation research to help advance applications and address concerns of ATA members and others in trucking.
