American Trucking Associations said Monday it won the 2013 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay Affiliate Challenge Award.

Penske Truck Leasing said it, too, was one of seven organizations to win the EPA award.

“Increasingly, companies are becoming cognizant of their carbon footprint and reducing greenhouse gases,” ATA President Bill Graves said in a statement.

“Fuel efficiency has always been of critical importance for trucking and ATA . . . [and] we’re proud of our history with the program and honored to be recognized with so many other leaders in improving freight sustainability,” he said.

ATA said it received the award for recruiting 14 fleets with nearly 2,700 trucks to join the SmartWay Transport Partnership and for promoting SmartWay’s benefits to its members and to state and federal policymakers.

Penske said it has promoted SmartWay through hosting of educational events for customers via webinars and one-on-one education, strategy and recruiting sessions.

The other five award winners were the Colorado Motor Carriers Association, the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, the North Central Texas Council of Governments, the Retail Industry Leaders Association and Wisconsin Clean Cities.

The SmartWay Affiliate Challenge was developed by EPA to acknowledge SmartWay affiliates that have initiated and executed exceptional recruiting, promotional and marketing activities in support of the EPA’s goals to reduce truck emissions and improve freight efficiency.

EPA’s SmartWay program is a partnership between EPA and the freight transportation industry that tests products and develops strategies carriers can use to reduce fuel use and greenhouse-gas emissions.
