ATA Pressing Congress on Renewing Natural-Gas Tax Credit
American Trucking Associations is pressing Congress to renew the tax credit for natural gas and propane, saying the credit encouraged people and businesses to switch to the alternative fuels.
The tax incentive is credited with helping promote natural-gas use in the trucking industry, but Congress let it expire Dec. 31.
The incentive is a 50-cent per-gasoline-gallon equivalent credit that applies to alternative fuels sold by a taxpayer for use in a motor vehicle or used by a taxpayer.
That means providers who pump natural gas and propane would again be eligible for the credit along with fleets that have their own natural-gas tanks in order to fill their trucks.
ATA and the National Propane Gas Association recently sent a letter asking for help from two powerful members of the Senate Finance Committee, Chairman Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah.), the ranking member.
“Our members utilize alternative-fuel vehicles that provide consumers transportation options that benefit the economy, our national security and the environment by displacing gasoline and diesel with clean, American-made energy,” the letter said.
