ATA Puts Bill Canary in Charge Of State, Federation Relations

William J. Canary Jr., vice president of intergovernmental affairs for American Trucking Associations, has added the duties of senior vice president for state and federation affairs.

He assumes the responsibilities that had been held by Paul T. Stalknecht, who resigned as senior vice president for federation relations to work with Fletch Transportation Services, which will operate a product-discount company for the industry called RoadNation.

Canary’s new title was announced Oct. 11. He has been with ATA for nine years, working closely with state trucking associations on projects such as repeal of Oregon’s weight-distance tax, western size and weight issues and national attempts to stop tolls from being imposed on Interstate highways. He also coordinated state association lobbying against the Department of Transportation’s hours-of-service proposal.

“ATA is fortunate to have someone with Bill’s expertise to help capitalize on the power that exists when the states and ATA work together to advance the interests of the industry,” ATA President Walter B. McCormick Jr. said. “This allows us to take the model that Bill has created for successful campaigns and put it into the day-to-day work of the federation.”
