OLUMBUS, Ohio - Though the big award at the National Truck Driving Championships went to FedEx Freight’s Mark Dietsche, other drivers received awards at the 66th annual event held here as well.

Overnite Transportation Co. driver Bob Akers won the Professional Excellence Award, handed out annually “to the driver who best exemplifies all the attributes that make up the professional truck driver.”

A 38-year veteran of the industry, Akers said he has been to many National Truck Driving Championships, but until this year wasn’t able to notch a win.

“What Greg Norman is to major golf tournaments, Bob Akers is to truck driving championships,” Akers said in his acceptance speech, referring to the famous golfer who has come close to winning numerous major tournaments but has often failed in the final round.
