Barbour Sees Close, ‘Consequential’ Election in November

LAS VEGAS – Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) said he could not predict the winner of the upcoming presidential election, but promised that it will be an extremely close – and important – contest.

“This is a dang close election,” Barbour, who supports Republican nominee Mitt Romney, told attendees of American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition. “And it is likely to be a dang close election if Romney can keep the focus on the policies that will help our country have economic growth and create jobs.”

This is the “most consequential presidential election in the lifetime of anybody in this room,” said Barbour, who urged attendees to publicly support Romney. He also faulted President Obama’s handling of the economy, health care, energy and other issues.

“The results of the second term will be exponentially seen in our economy and in our relationship with government,” Barbour said.

The former chairman of the Republican National Committee and current GOP strategist, also said he could not predict which party will have a majority in the Senate, but said the majority will be fewer than 53 seats.
