ATLANTA — Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway plans to offer guaranteed intermodal service between Chicago and the West Coast, which it says will be be time competitive with “team driver” trucking.
Matt Rose, president and chief operations officer for BNSF, said the service would start in May and would apply to BNSF lanes between Chicago and three destinations: Dallas, Seattle and San Bernadino, Calif. He announced the program April 12 during round-table discussion of rail executives during the International Intermodal Expo.
The plan, which features a money-back guarantee, will be one of two recently announced intermodal marketing plans from BNSF. The other is weekly intermodal “specials” on the company’s Web site.
As for the guaranteed on-time service, Dan Bartel, director of truck-rail for Schneider National Corp., agreed that the service would be comparable from a time perspective to truck service. He noted that drayage would add time vs. “door-to-door” deliveries for trucks.
