BNSF Railway reported profits rose 2% in the third quarter to $1 billion with strong results in all segments, except for agricultural products.
Revenue at the Class I railroad, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, increased 3% to $5.3 billion.
Revenue for consumer products, which usually go on intermodal rail, grew 8% to $1.8 billion. Carloads increased 7% to 1.4 million.
Coal revenue improved 6% to $1 billion and volumes went up 2% to 526,000.
Industrial product revenue rose 4% to $1.3 billion and carloads improved 2% to 459,000.
Agricultural revenue slipped 9% to $992 million and carloads declined 12% to 257,000.
The operating ratio improved 500 basis points to 62.2%.
